The population of Oxford has grown from 10,026 in 1990 to 13,800 currently (2005).   Lafayette County has grown in the same period of time from 31,826 to 38,000.    Oxford's population more than doubles in size (55%) in the fall when the University is in session.  

In Oxford and Lafayette County, education is extremely important to the community and focuses on the preparation for students entering college as well as entering the workforce.

Lafayette County has two public school systems.   Both school systems combined, the enrollment reaches about 6,000 students and serves to pre-kindergarten through 12 th grade.   Lafayette County and Oxford school systems are very proud of the fact that almost half of the teachers in both districts received advance degrees.

Student per teacher ratio in area high schools is at an impressive 16:1.

Both school districts have the option to receive training from the School of Applied Technology (TECH).   Students can be trained in computer technology, metal trades, auto and agricultural mechanics, construction technology and healthcare trades.

There are also two private institutions in Lafayette County that offer classes for children pre-kindergarten through eighth grade.
